Welcome – Trailer clip for mock-VR project
Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s conceptual virtual reality installation, Carne y Arena, allows its visitors to experience a fragment of the refugee experience for six and a half minutes. Through the apparatus, the museum-goers are put in the shoes of an immigrant on the run and are assumed to grasp the full experience. My project aims to point out the installation’s privileged and problematic approach to a sensitive subject by recycling the idea of equating a few minutes of VR experience to having lived through it, but reversing the targeted user. I designed a mock-installation called Welcome, which virtually takes its unprivileged users to live the materialistic American Dream.
